I started out studying to become a doctor, but ended up in medical emergency preparedness (GHOR) at what became the Safety Region Rotterdam-Rijnmond. From 2001 I worked there as policy officer and project leader: on the registration of injured and involved persons, including the GRAP software, on the regional plan for mass infectious diseases, and as on-call head of the crisis centre during incidents and crises. I ran more than 300 trainings and exercises, from boardrooms and mayors to dispatch centres and hospitals.
From 2012 to 2016 I was senior advisor at the National Operational Coordination Centre of the NCTV. I was part of the national crisis decision-making structure, including the MH17 core team and the Ebola outbreak working group, and was on-call head of the planning and advice section during the 2015 refugee crisis. Along the way I completed an MSc in Risk, Crisis and Disaster Management at the University of Leicester.
In 2017 I founded RED Management & Consultancy. Since then I have led the European Modular Field Hospital project, built a governorate crisis structure in Iraqi Kurdistan, served on Union Civil Protection Mechanism missions, and in 2024 and 2025 set up international crisis management consultancy across Aon's EMEA offices.
